Jon Heyman, of MLB Network, reports the Los Angeles Dodger have acquired DH Jim Thome from the Chicago White Sox.
This move likely means a significant reduction in Thome’s playing time given the absence of the designated hitter in an NL lineup. His new ballpark also presents a diminished homer environment on average.
You can barely say he’s comfortable playing the field, and you should expect mostly pinch-hitting duties from him. The Bums also have James Looney in tow, giving them a better glove and an equally capable run producer, if not homer masher.
Players in NL leagues should still acquire Thome immediately, if only for a bench spot, for his potential pop, but they should realize he won’t single-handedly save their power woes under a spotty schedule.
Thome owners in mixed leagues wouldn’t be blamed if they drop him as a result of his move to Hollywood. It’s not worth clinging to him if you need immediate help on a more frequent basis.
Meanwhile, the Sox open up their DH spot, which will presumably go to outfielder Carlos Quentin most often but could be rotated between Alex Rios and Jermain Dye as well. With Scott Podesdnic likely to man center field more often, these four now have stable roles.
