jorge Lorenzo capitalised on a miserable day for his closest title rivals as he took victory in the Indianapolis MotoGP race.

The Fiat Yamaha rider took his third win of 2009 with his team-mate Valentino Rossi and Dani Pedrosa both crashing in the 28-lap race at Brickyard.

Lorenzo won by 9.5seconds to halve Rossi's championship lead with five races left to go as the Italian failed to finish for the first time this year.

Rossi hit the deck nine laps in when fighting it out with Lorenzo. He got back on and tried to continue before having to admit defeat due to a damaged bike.

Pedrosa had started on pole but crashed on the fourth lap to lose his lead and, rejoining in last place, fought his way up to 10th by the end.

San Carlo Honda Gresini's Alex de Angelis came in second as he fights for his MotoGP future while Ducati's Nicky Hayden moved up from sixth in qualifying to finish third. Hayden had enjoyed a decent battle with Repsol Honda's Andrea Dovizioso who was fourth.

James Toseland equalled his best MotoGP result to date when he finished sixth behind Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) after Hayate's Marco Melandri crashed late on while fighting it out with the Englishman.

Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki) was seventh ahead of Mika Kallio (Ducati) and Toni Elias (San Carlo Honda Gresini) while debutant Aleix Espargaro, a stand-in for the Pramac Racing team, took three impressive points by claiming 13th spot.
